"And the Band Played On"

A Girl From Mt. Vernon

Retired February 1, 2006, from Oak Ridge
National Laboratory after 25 years!

There once was a girl from Mt. Vernon
who left without ever returnin’.
She went far away, and decided to stay
in a place where the atoms were churnin’.

Some folks say the Lab, radiates things so bad
in the hills that glow in the dark.
But she persevered, and after some years
"The Lab" became dear to her heart.

The people became more than friends, one and all
even though they called her a nag.
She whipped them and jabbed them
and begged them and nagged them
for training was this lady’s bag!

She spoke of her loved ones, both human and dog
and everyone knew them quite well.
There was one pretty girlie, and two little curlies
she thought were especially swell.

The time quickly passed, and the years sped away
‘til a "senior" they called her one day.
So she said goodbye, with a tear in her eye
and merrily went on her way.

Now don’t shed a tear, or feel terribly sad
‘cause it all had to come to an end.
She loved what she did, and if she had her wish
she’d do it all over again!
