"Close to You"

"Ruby, a most precious gem, with the dazzling brilliance of life
and the warm glow of true love and devotion."

"Ruby, Ruby, hey, over here big guy!"

Ruby sits up a little unsteadily and looks around to see who is calling him.

Brandon!  Can it be Brandon!  How can it be Brandon?  But it is Brandon, bounding over the lush green grass toward him at top speed, with his ears and tail flying and his feet barely touching the ground.

"Ruby, gee it's great to see you" cries Brandon as he slides to a stop, running into Ruby and almost knocking him over.

"Brandon" exclaims Ruby.  "I can't believe it's you!  What are you doing here?"  Ruby snuggles Brandon against his big chest between his long front legs and covers his face with kisses.

Brandon wiggles and returns the kisses and rubs his nose against Ruby's soft fur.  What a wonderful feeling that he remembers so well from all the times he and Ruby had snuggled together just like this.

"This is the Rainbow Bridge" Brandon says, "and now you and I can spend all our time together.  I'll show you the greenest meadows with the clearest water where the birds sing their prettiest songs.  I'll take you to meet all the other animals who live here and I'll even introduce you to the Top Man Himself.  I'll show you the best clouds for Earth watching and how to watch over our family.  It's a wonderful place and you're gonna love it!"

Ruby is a bit confused by all of this information.  So he and Brandon trot over the hills and valleys in the warm sun and Brandon shows Ruby all the joys of the Rainbow Bridge and takes him to meet all the other animals and the Top Man, who smiles and caresses Ruby's head and welcomes him.

Then Brandon takes Ruby to his favorite cloud where they lay, side by side, with Ruby's silky, crimson coat swirling against Brandon's soft, white curls, and watch the people on Earth that they love best.  Ruby had never imagined such contentment.  Brandon relates all the things that have happened to their family since they were parted from him.  Ruby has moments of great sadness as he listens to Brandon's story.  But when Brandon is finished, he goes on to tell Ruby how they can watch over their family together now, sending comfort to them, blowing them kisses on the gentle breezes, covering them with a blanket of love in time of need, and whispering soft words in the raindrops that splash against the windows.

"And the Top Man always listens when you need Him" adds Brandon.

So Ruby and Brandon rest happily at the Rainbow Bridge, watching over their loved ones on Earth and waiting patiently for the day when they will all be together again.

Peace be with you, dear companions.  You are loved.
