Education Development Center

This summer the Education Development Center (EDC) is offering mathematics professional development using materials from two new National Science Foundation-funded curriculum programs developed at EDC: Think Math! for K- grade 5 and Center for Mathematics Education (CME) Project for High School.

CME Project ÒDeveloping Mathematical Habits of MindÓ

August 4-8, Boston

In these five-day workshops, participants will engage in an approach to mathematics that centers on developing mathematical Habits of Mind. We welcome those who are interested in content-focused professional development as well as those who are planning to implement CME Project, a new four-year, NSF-funded high school curriculum. Developing Mathematical Habits of MindÑCME Project Workshops are for teachers, coaches, curriculum coordinators, and administrators. Workshops are facilitated by CME Project developers and experienced teachers.


ÒBuilding Number and Algebra the Think Math! WayÓ

August 4-8, Boston

Using Think Math! materials, Building Number & Algebra the Think Math! Way Workshops will present effective approaches to elementary mathematics content areas across grades. In two workshops, one emphasizing grades KÐ2 and the other grades 3Ð5, participants will explore how to build skill and understanding in addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, fractions/decimals, and algebraic thinking/language. Workshops are facilitated by Think Math! developers and experienced teachers.


Graduate credit is available for both CME Project and Think Math! Workshops


Participants can receive 28 Professional Development Points upon completion of each workshop.

PK-12 Department Chair for Math/Curriculum Coordinator

2008-2009 School Year

The Blake School seeks to hire an exceptional leader in mathematics education as a PK-12 Mathematics Department Chair. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching at multiple divisions, administrative acumen, excellent interpersonal skills and aÊpassion for sharing best practice pedagogy in the field. Department Chairs work closely with Division Directors and report directly to the Assistant Head of School.

The Math Department Chair will...
  • Collaborate with department members to articulate the shared vision consistent with Blake's mission, to oversee the mapping of the math curriculum PK-12, coordinate curriculum initiatives in and between divisions, and assess the overall program. Get toÊknow each math teacher in the Middle School and Upper School and the Lower School faculty, and develop a solid understanding of the curriculum through one-on-one conversations, classroom observations, department meetings and a careful review of mappedÊcourses;
  • Promote professional development, including summer opportunities, for all who teach mathematics so that each teacher can effectively implement a wide range of best-practice instructional and assessment strategies;
  • Be present on each campus each week, organizing department and attending divisional meetings, as appropriate and realistic; coordinating teaching assignments and managing budgets;
  • Serve on the Academic Affairs Committee, and work with other PK-12 Department Chairs and other Program Teams to coordinate and integrate, as appropriate, course content and offering
  • Design testing and placement for students entering Blake or seeking to accelerate in our program;
  • Audit the department's curriculum for and assist in the integration of multicultural perspectives, differentiated instruction, technology and media literacy, and service learning, where appropriate;
  • Collaborate closely with other administrators on hiring, retention, professional growth and evaluation of faculty in the department;
  • Communicate with parents and the wider community about the department's philosophy, vision, offerings, measures of success, challenges, etc.
  • Teach the equivalent of half time, rotating among divisions from year to year;
  • Monitor and review normative testing ERB, SAT, AP, etc.
