La Tuna Canyon Ride

This ride is a continuation of the Descanso Gardens and Tujunga Blvd. rides. Once to the top of Foothill near Tujunga Canyon Blvd. a left turn is made on Tujunga Canyon Blvd. (to the south) and then a right turn on La Tuna Canyon. After a short, steep climb one arrives at the top of La Tuna Canyon where the 210 Freeway passes over La Tuna Canyon Blvd. Beyond the 210 Freeway La Tuna Canyon Blvd. does a quick descent to the San Fernando Valley coming out in San Valley. I normally take Glenoaks toward Burbank and Glendale and return home via Verdugo Road to Descanso Drive. When time permits I enjoy taking Kenneth Road through Burbank and Glendale to Verdugo Road. The round trip from my home is about 38 miles, but I frequently stop at the Rose Bowl on the return trip long enough to do four laps to build the mileage to just over 50 miles (or more).

The view of La Tuna Canyon from Foothill Blvd. The freeway is the 210 Freeway. My climb will up the surface road to the right of the freeway.

The short, steep climb up La Tuna Canyon from Tujunga Canyon Blvd.

La Tuna Canyon summit and the start of the descent which can easily exceed 30 mph with no effort and 40 mph with minimal effort.

On one of my rides over La Tuna Canyon I paused just past the summit to take a picture looking into the San Fernando Valley. As I composed the picture a cyclist whizzed past and I quickly seized the opportunity for a picture of the descent. On occasion I will reverse the direction of my ride for variety and this becomes an interesting climb to the summit.

Glenoaks through Sun Valley going toward Burbank is usually very fast moving. This is my preferred path when meeting other riders for my Wednesday or Saturday group rides.

A historical house on Kenneth Road. There are several very nice homes in this area and when time permits it is a very pleasant ride along Kenneth Road and Mountain Street to Verdugo rather than using Glenoaks.

I will document the ride up Verdugo Road to Montrose separately as part of the Wednesday ride with the L. A. Wheelmen which meets at Griffith Park on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. I enjoy doing the La Tuna Canyon ride to get to Griffith Park for the Wednesday. During the daylight savings time period I have time to the do La Tuna Canyon prior to the Saturday ride which meets at Sonora and Glenoaks at 8:00 a.m.
