Tujunga Ride
The ride to Tujunga Canyon Blvd. and Foothill Blvd. is an extension of the Descanso Gardens ride. Once past Descanso Gardens, Descanso Drive increases in steepness for a brief climb past Verdugo, over the 210 Freeway to deadend on Foothill. Turning left (west) on Foothill the grade is more gentle and after a brief climb on Foothill it is again a gentle grade on Foothill. Round trip on this ride is about 25 miles from my house in Altadena.
After passing Descanso Gardens, Descanso Drive increases in steepness and continues past Verdugo to Foothill Blvd.
This the view on Foothill Blvd. looking back toward the Pasadena area. The first signal light is the on/off ramp to the 2 Freeway and the second signal light is Descanso Drive. These pictures were taken in early December, 2001 and the flags had been on display since the September 11, 2001 tragedy in New York.
Continuing to the west on Foothill Blvd the "summit" near the intersection with Tujunga Canyon Blvd. soon can be seen in the distance.
On one day in December 2001 I spotted this fine road machine parked at a Jack-in-the-Box on Foothill. The owner allowed me to photograph this excellent example of a Porsche 550 Spyder. The hills in the background are the Verdugo Hills.
Once to the top of Foothill Blvd. there are three options. First option: Turn right down Tujunga Canyon Blvd. and then up La Tuna Canyon Blvd. over La Tuna Canyon and into the San Fernando Valley (one of my favorites). Second option: Continue on Foothill Blvd. into the San Fernando Valley above Hansen Dam (one I have done a few times when going to the northern parts of the San Fernando Valley). Third option: Turn right and work your way over to the Tujunga Canyon and continue up to the intersection with Angeles Forest Highway. The latter option I have not done, but I plan to climb Angeles Crest Highway in the future and take the Angeles Forest Highway to Tujunga Canyon for the return. It has been a while since I have done Angeles Crest.
