PRESERVATION

One of my old membership cards for the MTPSIn March 1960 a tour of the Glasgow tram system was organized by the Liverpool University Public Transport Society. The tour used ex Liverpool car 869 (re-numbered car 1055 in Glasgow) which was one of a number of "green goddesses" that had been sold to Glasgow during the run down of the Liverpool system. During that tour the idea of preserving car 869 came about.

Liverpool Bogie Streamliner 869 operating at Crich Tramway Museum on 21st July 2001After many years at Leeds and Crich, 869 was eventually returned to Liverpool in 1967 were space was made available for it in Green Lane Depot. After 12 years of fund raising and hard work by the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society (MTPS), 869 was finally restored and in 1979 was returned to Crich Museum where it operates today. The society has since been very active in restoring other trams including Liverpool "English Electric" car 762 which can now been seen operating at Birkenhead, Merseyside.

Fully preserved English Electric Car 762 at BirkenheadCar 293, the official last tram remains at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Maine where it has been since soon after it last ran in Liverpool. This car has had no restoration and is now in very poor condition but latest indications are that the museum are considering plans to save it.

The other "Baby Grand", car 245 which was preserved by Liverpool Corporation Transport also now needs work and may become a future project for the MTPS.
