ROUTE 19

Bogie Streamliner car 183 at the Pier Head terminus [Photo: copyright Martin Jenkins]In 1953 the existing tracks to Southdene were extended. Route 19 ran from the Pier Head out north-east of the city and terminated at the Kirkby. On their way there, trams also passed through Anfield, Walton, Gillmoss before reaching Southdene. At Coopers Lane, route 19 turned north off the East Lancashire Road toward the Kirkby Trading Estate. Peak hour trams went a quarter of a mile beyond the Main Gate at Kirkby Trading Estate and instead terminated at Gate 5 of the estate.

Route 19 closed the same day as route 44 and on that day the Walton Depot also closed to trams. The last car to operate this route was Baby Grand car 206 on Saturday, November 3rd, 1956.

The picture on the right shows Bogie Streamliner car 183 at the Pier Head terminus.
