ROUTE 40
In the final days, route 40 ran east out of the city from the Pier Head on its trip to Pagemoss. Earlier, Castle Street had been the city end terminus for this route. After travelling along Lime Street, cars on 40 turned up Brownlow Hill on their outbound journey. Cars on the 40 route also went along Paddington, scene of a serious tram accident in 1934 when car 181 lost control and overturned at the bottom of the hill.
The 40 followed some of the same tracks as the 6A which also travelled east. At the end of Edge Lane Drive, eastbound 40's turned slightly north to Knotty Ash before heading in a direction parallel with the 6A.
The photo on the right shows Bogie Streamliner 906 climbing Brownlow Hill.
