ROUTE 6A
Route 6A trams left the centre loop at the Pier Head and travelled along Water Street. Like routes 10 and 40, the 6A headed out east of the city. The photo on the right shows Baby Grand car 293 in its special "last tram" colours at the Pier Head amongst the buses that will soon replace it. Behind can be seen part of the Royal Liver Building.
After travelling along Dale Street and William Brown Street, 6A cars headed-up London Road where the second picture was taken (on the left). Again this Baby Grand is competing for road space with a bus in the run-up to closure of the tram system. This particular tram, car 245 was later preserved by Liverpool City Transport.
Eventually the route reached Edge Lane, home of the city transport works and depot which had been completed in 1926 and 1928 respectively. Here (photo on right) another Baby Grand, car 237 is seen heading eastwards. It will soon pass the large works and depot on its right.
After Edge Lane the route reaches "The Rocket". The location is named after Robert Stephenson's famous steam locomotive that won the Rainhill Trials for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1829. Soon after 6A cars actually crossed-over the Liverpool & Manchester Railway tracks by means of a road bridge.
Travelling further east, this route finally terminates close to Bowring Park where the photo on the left was taken. This picture captures car 238 another of the Baby Grand cars to last until close to the end of the system.
