"Life is a journey not a
destination"
Dawn's Journey Is An Ever
Changing And Growing Body Of
Work...
Born and raised in West Michigan, Dawn has been
involved in ceramics since the age of 2, when her mother opened a
hobby ceramics studio. Having been actively involved in her
mother's business and enjoying every form of art she could, Dawn
learned to love
art. Dawn
attended college for interior decorating, but life led her in many
different directions and away from creating art. After many
years of a successful real estate career, she realized a part of her
was starving and needed to be fulfilled. Knowing that
she was meant to do pottery, Dawn took a class at Kendall College of
Art and was hooked. She began purchasing equipment and every
book she could find. Her tenacity (or stubbornness as some who
know her well might call it) and her desire to learn have
fostered great growth in her career in
pottery.
2002 was an exciting year: Dawn opened Khnemu Studio's
gallery, joined Blue
Coast Artists, and was featured on TV for her pottery.
Her work is already in private collections all over the
world. Dawn's work can be seen at Khnemu Studio,
various art galleries and art fairs. Contact the studio to find out where
her work is currently being
shown.
With much hard work Dawn's dreams are coming true. She
appreciates the people in her life who have loved, taught and
supported her on the journey. Special thanks go to her loving
and supportive husband and mom. Dawn dedicates her studio to
the memory of her father and all he taught her.
Artist's Statement Preservation, nature
and knowledge are key to my life's journey. I am motivated by
an intense inner-drive to create and to impart what I have learned
to others. My work consists of unique firing techniques, final
outcome of which, in part, demands an acceptance of the innate
beauty of a natural process and the beauty of things
imperfect. The non-traditional interplay of classical forms
and natural processes embodies the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi Sabi,
which is concerned with the beauty of studied simplicity and harmony
with nature.
  Khnemu Studio In Egyptian
mythology Khnemu was the god of creation. It was believed by
the ancients that Khnemu fashioned man and the gods on his potter's
wheel. "Khnemu" literally means molder or sculptor. He
is represented in hieroglyphics as the ram-headed
god. Khnemu Studio is a place of creation. The clay
comes from our earth, my hands are the vessel that creates the
form, and the fire is what gives life to my creation. Without
these elements it would still be the dirt we take for
granted.
