Client tips: Which is better for a business logo - symbolic or illustrative?

A logo is a graphic image which defines your company and the products and services you provide. Your logo should be readily recognized, easily reproduced in color or black and white, and provide a solid business identity. This is why most graphic and web site designers prefer symbolic logos.

A symbolic logo is just that - a graphic symbol or stylized text. Designed with a minimum number elements, a symbolic logo is quickly remembered due to its simplicity. A symbolic logo looks great in a small size for the web, or enlarged for print publications. This type of logo design provides great flexibility to depict what your company offers. Symbolic logos require less time to design and so are less expensive than illustrative logos.

An illustrative logo is a detailed picture (illustration) showing a particular feature of a business. Thus, the range of what this type of logo can depict is limited. To clearly show all elements of an illustration, this type of logo needs to be fairly large. An illustrative logo can be useful in a printed publication. For the web, illustrative logos end up taking too much space on a web page. Illustrative logos are more expensive than symbolic logos because more hours of design time go into its creation.
